Strengthening emergency care alongside local teams
Emergency Systems Development Australia is an Australian charity working with hospital teams in resource-limited settings to strengthen emergency care.
Together, we introduce practical triage systems, improve patient flow and train frontline clinicians and local trainers. Our approach combines education with changes to everyday care, shaped by local priorities and available resources.
What we do
Emergency care training
We deliver practical training in recognising and managing acutely ill and injured patients, including WHO Basic Emergency Care and triage courses.
Triage and patient flow
We work with hospital teams to introduce triage, organise care areas and improve patient flow, helping staff prioritise the sickest patients.
Local training capacity
We support local clinicians to become trainers and lead ongoing education, helping hospitals maintain skills as staff and services change.
Working alongside hospital teams in The Gambia
We partner with Gambian clinicians and hospital leaders to strengthen emergency care, starting with local priorities and practical changes that work within available resources.
At Ndemban Trauma Centre (EFSTH Bakau Centre) and EFSTH Banjul, this has included introducing triage, reorganising the emergency department into designated care areas, and delivering triage and WHO Basic Emergency Care training.
